SA METAL VETERANS ANGERKILL & DEADPOOL UNITE AND TAKE STAND
11.28.2007

“The Takeover was born out of a need for change.  Our music scene is littered with greed, selfishness, and apathy.  Out of our frustration and disdain toward this full grown tumor, which parasitically sucks the life and art from our veins, we seek to establish simplicity, integrity, and honor in the live music community.”

The Takeover is led by San Antonio metal veterans Angerkill (AK) and Deadpool (DP).  Both bands have persevered in the local and regional music scene for 10 years.  This type of longevity and relevance is uncommon, thus making this pair the perfect representatives for the upcoming revolution.

During the course of their respective decade long existence, many lessons were learned and mistakes made out of naivety were common.  With age comes wisdom, and they have found a better way.  Simply stated, The Takeover represents the decision to take control.

The Takeover is not completely cynical.  AK and DP must stress the importance of having the support of key individuals and institutions (you know who you are) over the last ten years.   AK and DP express their allegiance to these allies, and ask for their continued support!

The line has been drawn….a new era begins.

-- FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE TAKEOVER --

1.      What makes ‘The Takeover’ shows unique compared to other local shows?

The takeover is a throwback to the way things used to be here in SA.  Our shows are 100% D.I.Y. and collectively run by members of Angerkill (AK) and Deadpool (DP).  We will generally never have more than 4 bands on each bill with 45 minute sets.  The first three bands are always from San Antonio.  DP & AK alternate 10 and 11 o clock slots and the midnight is a regional.  We will never charge more than a $5 cover.  EVERY BAND IS PAID EVERY TIME – always with the opportunity to make in the three digits.  Regionals come in with pre-set guarantees.

 2.      Are you against the concept of local production companies?

No.  This is a fight to strengthen our scene based on the specific beliefs of AK & DP about what is needed to be done to attain the thriving metal scene SA has had in the past.  We will use what we have learned through the years to put together memorable local shows based solely on the concept of “metal for the art of music”.

This is not a lash out at production companies.  Production companies are beneficial to some artists & venues here in town and we acknowledge and respect this.  We have some very good comrades on the scene who run SA production companies.

 3.      Why only 4 bands per bill?

A show is an enticement of the senses; aural in this case.  Look at things this way:  If you are going to a restaurant and get overpriced shitty food, you wont’ likely return.

This is part our theory of the decline in our music scene.  If you pay $8 to hear bands with sub-par equipment & bad sound, you won’t likely return.  This is why when Chimaira or Slayer comes, hordes of people show up and when there’s a metal show with ten great local bands on it, nobody goes.  For the last few years, our local scene has been serving shitty food at high prices.

Just like your stomach, your brain can only intake so much before fatigue sets in.  This has nothing to do with how good or bad the bands are.  Booking 10 bands on a show is like attempting to eat a 10 course meal – no matter how good it is, no one will comfortably stay from beginning to end.

 4.      I’m a band.  How can I get booked on a show?

Contact us at thetakeover2k8@yahoo.com, although I must warn you that we have regionals in mind for the rest of the year.  We are both involved in booking the shows, yet the 11 o clock band is ultimately responsible for booking the regional.

We are ALWAYS looking for great sounding & hard working SA bands!!!  If you consider yourself one, or know of one, hit us up.  We’ll be rotating out veteran & newer bands because it makes best sense that it’s more beneficial to all to have a band on our bill that has never played with AK or DP.  This cross-pollination is a key element in our strategy to strengthen our metal scene.  On that note, we should probably try for all newer bands every TIME, but we want to throw down with our buddies too!!!

If you want on our bill, we ask that you do not play any other local show a week before or a week after our show.  If you violate this, we reserve the right to remove you from the bill and replace you with another SA band.  There is one exception to this:  if the other show is a national, take it if you can get it!!  It doesn’t matter how close to our date it is.

5.      What are Deadpool and Angerkill trying to accomplish by this?

We hope to break the cycle - one show at a time.  We all know that things won’t change overnight.  All we can do is showcase premium artists and low prices and watch attendance grow.  People can be confident that you will only find premium sounding professional Texas bands on our bill.

6.      I’m a venue.  Why do I want your show at my place and who do I contact if I want to talk business?

You want our show at your club because of our crowd.  We have established solid followings here in SA over the years that attend every well-promoted show and drink your bar dry.  The last three times DP and AK have played together, venues have run out of domestics.  (Stock your Bud, Bud Light and Miller Lite!!!)  Many of our fans already like both bands.  Some don’t.. but it’s always a party at our shows (see pictures below from our last two shows together in August and December of this year).

Another reason is our guaranteed methods of promotion.  Unlike many bands today, we don’t live and breathe on Myspace.  You will find our flyers all over town, our ads on TV and our ads in local publications for these shows.  For every show, we intend to burn hundreds of CDs with all 4 bands and distribute these “audio flyers” at various establishments all over town.  We have dedicated friends and supporters who help us distribute materials - the best promo is word of mouth!

The last reason is because we don’t over saturate ourselves in this market by over-playing.  In our opinion, this is one of the biggest mistakes any band here can make.  We’ve found that it can burn you out and is pretty ineffective!  It’s QUALITY; not QUANTITY!!  Our shows are best described as ‘events’.

7.      I have a business and would like to sponsor a show.  Who do I contact?

To be included on any and all advertising, contact DP Carlos at carlos@deadpoolsociety.com or AK Dave at www.myspace.com/masterofjen or angerkill@sbcglobal.net

8.      Does 'The Takeover' have any sponsors yet?

The entire takeover series of 4 shows is proudly sponsored by Robb’s Metalworks, Screenpro Graphics and Tex Press.

9.      Several bands have endured the test of time here in San Antonio.  Why only Deadpool and Angerkill?

For simplicity.  We are good friends with most, if not ALL of the SA bands that have endured the test of time.  Although it would be KILLER to do this together, we chose to do this as a 50/50 venture.  The more people involved, the harder it can be to keep things running smoothly.  We don’t set meetings to discuss ‘Takeover” business.  Some of us see each other several times a week and we all find ourselves with strong feelings towards certain aspects of the local scene.  We get together as family (even holidays), bullshit, jam out to metal, BBQ, our kids play together – these are our meetings. (See photos).  We piss each other off, but always get over it because we know there’s no other option – we’ll end up in each other’s faces the next weekend.  It seemed like the most likely thing to do.

We know who our SA band history is with.. and you can bet that we intend to involve each one of them one way or another.  Refer to question four about “cross pollination”

10.  What do AK and DP get out of it?

We know our shows won’t suck.. and if they do, it’s our fault!

We have strong beliefs in what shows should be, and we’re trying our best to make it happen. We all do this because we love it and it’s no fun when shows are not run properly.
